The Paparoa Wildlife Trust (PWT) is a conservation initiative powering ahead in its effort to establish and maintain effective recovery programmes for great spotted kiwi/roroa (Apteryx haastii) and blue duck/whio (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) in the South Paparoa Range, north of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island.
Management based on predator trapping has been the main focus for the Moonlight whio project, with the aim being to maintain numbers and prevent any further decline of whio in this Valley. Long term the goal is to re establish a healthy whio population via transfer of juveniles from adjacent river valleys that may not be benefiting from pest control.
The major goal for the great spotted kiwi/roroa project is species recovery. Like other kiwi projects on the West Coast we are doing this through Operation Nest Egg (ONE). In addition to management focussed on species recovery, the relative lack of information on great spotted kiwi/roroa imparts the project with valuable scientific components that will help to ensure improved management of the species both locally and throughout their range.
Ownership, educational benefits and enjoyment of the projects are perhaps the key elements of involvement for the local community. - Participation by young and old alike will ensure that the projects flourish and remain true to their mission statements.
Mission statement
To be recognised as a professional conservation organisation fostering community involvement and ecological enhancement.
Success of the projects in a community education and environmental enhancement context depends on the level of commitment of trustees, paid staff, volunteers and support from the local community, iwi and other interested parties.
Continued existence of great spotted kiwi/roroa and blue duck/whio in the South Paparoa Range necessitates embracement of Paparoa Wildlife Trust's recovery project by skilled, enthusiastic and dedicated participants.
To secure self-sustaining populations of great spotted kiwi/roroa and blue duck/whio in the South Paparoa Range in perpetuity through bringing communities and stakeholders together to collectively drive recovery efforts.
To have a broad-based team who progressively increase great spotted kiwi/roroa and blue duck/whio populations on the West Coast through nurture of a collectively owned vision and a planned future based on financial soundness and smart promotion.
To effect successful great spotted kiwi/roroa and blue duck/whio recovery through retention of a committed and skilled team that strategically plans and executes all of its activities, attracts sufficient funding to enable adequate resourcing of field staff and raises awareness of the project through astute communication and relationships.
